REMINDER ABOUT THANKSGIVING WEEK

A message from BURGESS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STURBRIDGE

Tuesday, November 24, 2020

Good afternoon Burgess Families,

This is a reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday, November 25th, is a remote half day for all students.  Additionally, there will be no school Thursday, November 26th and Friday, November 27th in observation of Thanksgiving.

Attached you will find a message from Dr. Nosek with guidance and links pertaining to holiday plans and safe travel.  Please know that our families and staff have been very cooperative in notifying us and following necessary precautions when a possible exposure or symptoms occur as well as when they have traveled.  We anticipate that this cooperation will continue and thank everyone for their support.

I would like to wish everyone a very happy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,

Kathy Pelley, Principal

Safe Travels Email from Dr. Nosek

Dear Families and Staff,

I hope that you and your families are continuing to maintain your good health as we move towards the start of the holiday season. We have greatly appreciated the close communication between our families, our staff, administration and school nurses. Your ongoing communication with the school and our nurses, has helped us all remain vigilant in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in our schools.

Over the past couple of weeks we have received questions regarding guidance related to holiday travel, and the impact of COVID on holiday plans. We are providing some general information from the State of Massachusetts. This information can also be found on the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) Website.

As of August 1, 2020, the Governor of Massachusetts declared a MA COVID-19 Travel Order in accordance with standards issued by the Commissioner of the Department of Public Health. According to the order, all visitors and returning residents entering Massachusetts must follow the new travel orders.

Part of the order requires the completion of a Massachusetts Travel Form which is included in the following link: https://www.mass.gov/forms/massachusetts-travel-form.

We also have a link to the MA DPH on our school district website www.tantasqua.org, should you need additional information about this, or other COVID-19 related questions.

If you have any questions regarding your specific travel plans or health related issues, we encourage you to speak with the School Nurse.  We appreciate the partnership we have had as we work to keep your children and families, our staff and our community as safe as possible.  We wish you a happy and healthy Thanksgiving.

                        Sincerely,

                       Erin Nosek

School Committee Meeting Tonight

Good Afternoon Burgess Families,

This is to inform you that the topic of tonight’s school committee meeting is to discuss our next phase of reopening.

It is important to note that the discussion will not result in the return of a significant number of children to in-person full time learning as per guidance from the Sturbridge Board of Health based on current CDC and DPH recommendations.

The meeting will be recorded and available on Sturbridge Cable Access.

Please know that the school committee and administration understand and appreciate the challenges these unprecedented times have placed on our students, families, and staff and will continue to prioritize returning students to our school as health metrics will allow.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us.

Respectfully,

Kate Alexander, Sturbridge School Committee Chair

Virtual Turkey Trot sponsored by Ted

As many of you know, Ted. hosts a Turkey Trot every year during Thanksgiving weekend. We are attempting to keep up tradition through the unique circumstances this year brings, and we have decided to host a Virtual Trot-from-home Edition! Anyone is able to participate from home by registering online through the link below. Run a mile, a 5k, a 10k, or walk 3 miles over 3 days? It doesn’t matter to us! There is an option to have a shirt sent to you or to pick up your shirt at the High School. Each Registration helps Ted. give back to our schools through grants so that we can help give our students an extraordinary learning experience. For each finishing post shared with us or on social media by a registered runner, Tasse’s Oil & Propane will donate $5 to the Tantasqua Education Foundation.
Here is the link to register:

***ATTENTION 5TH GRADE FAMILIES***

*This fundraiser is for Burgess Grade 5 Students*
Dear Burgess 5th grade families –
In a typical year we would be raising funds to send our class on educational experiences in their 6th grade year (in the previous years it was Project O and other activities). These are likely to be 2-3 activities spread out over the school year. We currently do not know exactly what extracurricular educational experiences our current 5th graders will participate in during their 6th grade year. However, we would like to move forward with a couple legacy fundraisers to begin to build the activity fund account for our class, the Burgess Class of 2022. All fundraisers are optional and all monies raised will go into the general activity account fund for the Burgess Class of 2022 (our current 5th graders).
Our first fundraiser will be Butter Braid Pastry and Joyful Traditions Cake Rolls. All sales are through a personalized online sales page. These are for LOCAL delivery only. The Butter Braids and Cake Rolls will arrive frozen. Participants will pick up their order – via contactless delivery and then they personally distribute items purchased by their friends and family.
Here is what you need to know:
Sale Dates: Tuesday, November 17 – Monday, November 30
Product Pick Up: Saturday, December 19, 2020 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Product Pick Up Location: Burgess Elementary School –  Contactless drive thru style
*Participants are responsible for delivery all products purchased through their sales link*
Sales: 100% online – no paper sales

Congratulations Rose Wengender!

“Rose Wengender won the Safe Routes to School [SRTS] Yard Sign Contest for designing a picture that discourages texting while driving.  This is a statewide competition and she was one of a few entries selected to become yard signs which will be distributed around the Commonwealth to promote this important initiative.  Rose got her entry in last year right before we went remote.  Today, Rachael O’Donnell, our SRTS Representative, presented Rose with her yard sign.  Her parents joined her for this celebration.  Mrs. Willard, her Grade 7 art teacher, organized a socially distanced, outdoor reception with pizza, salad and gourmet cupcakes.  Mrs. Vinton, her Grade 6 art teacher, gave Rose a beautiful bouquet of flowers.  Excellent job, Rose!”
